Hawcoat Park 87 Carlisle Crusaders 29
Saturday 30th November 2019
Firstly a special mention for the young Carlisle 11 players who travelled to Barrow. We lent them varying lads to make the game as competitive as possible. However each of the Carlisle lads were a credit to their club never giving in and at times showing some real quality to help make this an enjoyable watch in the winter sun perfect for a game of rugby.
As to be anticipated we started the stronger, lively scrum half Lewis Sayle was prominent in the early exchanges and helped himself to two early trys. Former Captain Jason Priss returning to the side at No 8 was another who had a very strong game throughout and scored the second try. Winger Luke Harrison was a handful every time he got his hands on the ball running strongly and showing good pace throughout the whole game. He and returning centre Chris Burns another effective runner who collected a first half try. 30 mins into the game the score was 35- 0.
At this point Carlisle collected their first try pouncing on our mistake it was Col Wright a home player kindly playing for Carlisle who finished well in the corner.
Before half time winger Rodney Odondi scored our sixth try catching a perfect cross kick from man of the match fly half George Smith. Unfortunately Rodney pulled his hamstring in finishing off the try. Half time 40-5.
Carlisle dug in deep during the second half. The intensity in our play dropped off a little as mistakes were made and tackles missed but this was to take nothing away from the spirit and endeavour shown by the Carlisle lads who at one point playing some good handling rugby got the score back to 45- 24.
As to expected we finished the stronger and regular further trys were collected including Luke Harrison completing a hat trick and then much to the amusement of his teammates dropping the ball over the line after a lung busting length of the field run.
Final score 87 -29.
The list of try scorers were:
Lewis Sayle 2 Luke Harrison 3 Jason Priss 2 Chris Burns 2 Rodney Odondi George Smith Paul Woodburn Andy Graham.
With fly half George Smith adding 11 conversions and controlling our play well.
A special thanks to the Carlisle lads who travelled played well and stopped after the game for a few beers. Also to our lads including Martin Kennedy, Col Wright, Col Niven, Andy Graham and Andy Kent who at varying times put on the Carlisle shirt.
A word also for referee Liam Nicholls who as always controlled the game sensibly. It was good also to see club stalwart Kenny Knowles back in Barrow now living in Carlisle he had travelled down on the Carlisle bus to catch up with his many friends at our Club.
Another tough encounter awaits next week with a pre Christmas trip up the coast to play Bennies awaits.
